A 20-institution consortium, coordinated by Charles University with AI Sweden's language-understanding team among the contributors, building open multilingual foundation models from the ground up. Its MixtureVitae dataset is free to use commercially; MultiSynt extends training data to smaller languages including Swedish, Icelandic and Hungarian. First models are expected in autumn 2026.
Infrastructure alone isn't the finish line. Per the EU's own Apply AI Alliance, the harder and more important test is whether Europe keeps the capability to actually train and improve models — not just host somebody else's. That's the distinction this list tries to track.
